Publication ACCR Presentation on South32's Climate Plan
South32 has committed to put its recently released Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP) to a vote at its 27 October AGM. The CCAP presents the company’s emissions data, targets and decarbonisation strategy.
Are the targets aligned with a 1.5C pathway and what commitments have been made on scope 3 emissions?
There are some big challenges ahead for South32. The plan focuses on four operations that generate the vast majority (93.3%) of the company’s Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions: Hillside Aluminium, Mozal Aluminium, Worsley Alumina and Illawarra Metallurgical Coal.
Hillside’s decarbonisation will rely on significant changes to South Africa’s coal-dominated national grid. Mozal is powered by hydroelectricity and the contract post 2026 has not yet been confirmed. Worsley needs attention to shift from coal to gas reliance. South32’s Appin metallurgical coal mine has the highest methane pollution of any NSW coal mine.
Watch this briefing to cover off on the big climate issues facing South32.
